Varvara need to stay focused to reach 2R

Lepchenko V. – Van Uytvanck A.

Lepchenko (52 in the world) is looking to advance to the 2 round, which she have only managed 2 times before in the US Open. She have been playing here since 2005 (9 attempts ) and made it to R3 as best in 2012. But I think she may have a good chance this year, she is facing the Belgian upcoming star? Van Uytvanck, ranked 83 in the world.

Lepchenko leads H2H 2-0, all matches in 2014 as well, and have yet not lost a set and only loosing 4 games in both matches against Uytvanck (62 62 and 64 60). She should have the momentum and edge in confidence here. Lepchenko is also 7-3 against lower ranked players on hard courts.

Lepchenko have been on a decent run lately, even if she lost her two lastest tournaments in 1R and qualification, she is on a 6-4 wining streak on HC and have done some good results here in USA. She reached the 3R in Indian Wells (beating Uytvanck), R16 in Miami (out to Wozniacki), SF in Stanford (out to kerber) and 1R in Cincinatti (out to Stosur). She have managed to win against top players like Jankovic, kuznetsova and Radwanska on her way..

Van Uytvanck, born 1994, have only been here once before in 2013, were she did lose in the qualification stages.  She have a QF from Florianopolis as best result on HC this year, were she was beaten by Muguruza (2-1). But after that (after loosing to Lepchenko in Indian Wells), she have not managed to get through the first round in 5 straight tournaments on hard courts and she have only managed to win 2 matches of her 10 latest. She is 3-7 on hard and 2-8 on hard court against higher ranked players.

As Lepchenko should be the one with best form lately and feeling some home advantage? (she has been playing this slam for 9 years). She should have more experience, also she have been playing against some top players before US Open, winning against Radwanska in Stanford and taking sets from kerber, I think she should have the momentum in this one, playing better players than her opponent.

Even though Van Uytvanck is not a bad player and she is up coming and Lepchenko is not the most trustful one, I think looking at the H2H from this year  has to mean something: Belgian only taking 4 games in both matches plus the Belgians recent poor form and stats lately, she really need to put something extra up to win this in a Slam I think.  This match is on Lepchenkos racket and mind IMO, she should advance here..

Kuznetsova S. – Erakovic M.

I think the two time grand slam winner kuznetsova will have a good chance reaching at least the  R3 or R4 without to much problem, but you never know.. She is the better player here and should have the experience and keep building on recent confidence to win this match:

Currently ranked 21 in the world she have been playing US Open since 2002, with best result in 2004 winning the Championship, Final 2007, and with a 3R appearance in 2013. She have a record of winning 9-1 first rounds matches at this event, so only one year she did not make it through the 1 round. She is 33-10 in main draw in the US Open.

She is on a current 7-3 record on Hard, winning Washington some week ago. Recently beating Makarova, Bouchard and taking set against Ivanovic most lately on HC. She have a good form into the Open. She is also 8-2 on HC beating lower ranked players in Slams..

Her opponent – Erakovic – ranked 82 in the world have not accomplished the same wins and stats in this event. She have a record of 3-7 in her last 10 matches, but did go to the QF in Washington loosing to Nara and were she is on a recent 4-6 record on hard court. But some stats i find important is that she have a negative 3-7 winning record vs higher ranked players on HC and only 2-5 record against better ranked players in slams on HC.

Erakovic have reached the US Open first round at best and on 4 occasions, but have never gone further – with 4 first rounds exist – against kuznetsovas winning 9-1 first rounds in the US Open.

Also in in my mind, Erakovic played the finals in doubles at New Haven on saturday 23/8 and may be more eager to do well on that side of the slam this year when she is facing such a though opponent directly.

Can’t see kuznetsova loosing this one, she is the better player, better record, experience and confidence to win this match..
